Nintendo is bringing a stripped-down palm-sized NES to market at the end of this year.
The Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System is a mini version of the company’s classic console that comes with 30 built-in games, including beloved classics like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Kirby’s Adventure.
It hits shelves in Australia and New Zealand on November 10, and will set you back NZ$120. (Mighty Ape has it available for pre-order.)
Naturally, because this is Nintendo reviving its old titles, there are caveats. The company makes no mention of old NES game cartridges being compatible with the system, so assume they can’t be used.
Old NES controllers won’t work with it either – it ships with one Classic Mini: NES Controller, and for two-player games you’ll have to buy another for AU$20 (NZ$25 or so). Fortunately, the Wii’s Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro can both be used, and the Classic Mini: NES Controller can be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii U or Wii console.
The Classic Mini: NES doesn’t work out of the box either: you need to buy an AC adapter for its USB power cable first. It does ship with an HDMI cable though.
Once you are up and running, you needn’t worry about losing any hard-earned progress, as each game has multiple suspend points which allow you to start where you left off, no passwords needed.
“Each title is sure to bring back fond memories and produce plenty of new ones,” said Nintendo.
“Relive past glories, defeat the boss that you could never beat, or simply enjoy the classic titles of yesteryear anew.”
The built-in titles are:
Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
Donkey Kong Jr.
DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE
MEGA MAN 2
Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
The Legend of Zelda
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
